Gosport MP, Caroline Dinenage, is encouraging constituents to remain scam smart during the Covid-19 outbreak.
In 2018, Caroline hosted the Constituency’s first ever Scam Smart event after learning that the cost of fraud was £9.7 billion a year and invited local organisations, from Gosport Citizens Advice to Hampshire Constabulary, to provide advice and information to members of the public.
She has set up a webpage with information about how to remain vigilant against fraud and scams, especially when people are looking to exploit the vulnerable during these troubled times. With so many new Government schemes, bank loans and information there has been concern raised from the public and the Government about the spread of misinformation and those looking to take advantage of current events.
The Government, Hampshire County Council and Gosport Borough Council have also provided advice pages on how to look out for and avoid scams.
Caroline commented:
“It is disgusting how some individuals look to exploit these incredibly difficult times, especially targeting the vulnerable in our community. The spread of misinformation and fraud is incredibly distressing and harmful for local people who may already be struggling.
“I recommend that everyone remains vigilant and reads up on the kinds of scams and fraud that could be coming their way to ensure they stay safe at home. If in doubt, only trust information and correspondence from Government or a reliable source."
