Local MP Caroline Dinenage has celebrated the restoration of HMS Alliance at Gosport's Royal Navy Submarine Museum, praising the generosity of fundraisers during questions to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) this morning.
The last surviving WW2 era submarine, HMS Alliance is currently undergoing restoration after securing part of an £11m Heritage Lottery Funding grant, protecting the iconic vessel's future.
Commending the fundraising work of the HMS Alliance Appeal, Caroline asked:
"Does the minister join me in celebrating the amazing fundraising work of our museums including the submarine museum in Gosport which has raised over £6.5 million through heritage funding and lots and lots of fundraising in order to restore HMS Alliance.
Expressing his agreement, the Minister responsible, Ed Vaizey MP replied:
"I'm delighted to endorse what my honourable friend says. There is a huge amount of philanthropy outside London, we've made it far easier to give to the arts and we've invested through the capitalist funds and endowments in fundraising capacity."
The conservation project to restore HMS Alliance will be completed in Spring 2014. For more information on the Saving HMS Alliance Project please visit www.submarine-museum.co.uk or call 02392 545036.
