Local MP Caroline Dinenage is hoping to re-chart the fortunes of the area's maritime industry, as she hosted the inaugural 'Sailing Scene' meeting at Royal Clarence Marina this morning.
The event brought together representatives from over 50 of the peninsula's top marine organisations, including Sir Robin Knox-Johnston from Clipper Ventures (ocean racing) and The Queens Harbour Master, Cdr Nigel Hare. The aim was to lay the foundations for a strong partnership designed to promote the Gosport peninsula's world-class sailing and yachting infrastructure.
Speaking after the meeting Caroline said:
"It's vital that we get all the key players pulling in the same direction so that we can put the Gosport peninsula on the map as the south coast's premier marine and sailing destination. With over 20 miles of stunning waterfront, three marinas and a hugely talented workforce, the potential benefits for our economy are massive."
The event culminated in the formation of a Sailing Strategy Group to arrange networking events and push forward ideas for growth in the Gosport Marine Sector. It is hoped the SSG enjoys similar success to Caroline's Daedalus Strategy Group which has been vital in the creation of £25m Enterprise Zone and Regional Growth Fund investment at the former military site.
