Gosport MP Caroline Dinenage highlighted the importance of promoting vocational opportunities in Parliament today.
During Questions to the Secretary of State for Education, the local MP argued that young people must be made aware of vocational opportunities throughout their school careers. She asked:
"Given the number of young people not in education, employment or training, does the Minister agree with me that it is vital throughout the education process that young people are made aware of the vocational opportunities, apprenticeships and other options available to them?"
Education Minister John Hayes, responding on behalf of the Government, expressed his agreement. He said:
"For too long, as I've said in this House before, we've convinced ourselves that the only means of gaining prowess comes through academic achievement. I, like William Morris, like John Ruskin, believe that technical talents and tastes deserve their place in society".
The Minister went on to confirm that the reformed careers service provision in schools will ensure that students "with those sort of aspirations can achieve their full potential".
The question reflects Caroline's long-standing commitment to promoting vocational training and apprenticeship opportunities, both nationally and in Gosport.
