"Giving up single use plastic for Lent was a huge eye opener for me to understand how difficult it is to avoid unnecessary waste packaging. These ambitious plans will change this." Caroline Dinenage MP
Local MP, Caroline Dinenage, has welcomed new plans unveiled by the Environment Secretary to eliminate avoidable waste.
The Government has updated the Resources and Waste Strategy; the most comprehensive change in a decade.
To do this, the new Resources and Waste Strategy will cut our reliance on single-use plastics, end confusion over household recycling, tackle the problem of packaging by making polluters pay, and end the economic, environmental and moral scandal that is food waste.
Key measures include:
Legally ensures businesses and manufacturers pay the full cost of recycling or disposing of their packaging waste – up from just 10 per cent now.Calls on producers to take more responsibility for items that can be harder or costly to recycle including cars, electrical goods, and batteries.Ends confusion over what to recycle at home to improve recycling rates. We will simplify the existing complicated system with a consistent England-wide approach. Explores weekly collections of food waste for every householdIntroduces a deposit return scheme to increase the recycling of single-use drinks containers
Commenting Caroline said: "These new plans are ambitious in improving our natural environment and ending unnecessary waste.
All too often we see this waste ending up on our beaches or on the streets.
I'm really pleased to see the Government giving this issue the attention it deserves."
