Gosport MP Caroline Dinenage is urging the local community and small businesses to "Be Cyber Streetwise" and keep their information safe online.
The "Be Cyber Streetwise" campaign was launched earlier this month and aims to change the way people view online safety and provide the public with the skills and knowledge they need to protect their cyber security.
The campaign comes on the back of findings from the Government's most recent National Cyber Security Consumer Tracker which shows that more than half of the UK's population are not taking simple steps to protect themselves online.
Commenting on the initiative, Caroline said:
"Now that the internet can be accessed on a whole range of mobile devices, it is more important than ever that people stay savvy about the dangers posed by cyber criminals.
It is easy to forget just how vulnerable we are online which is why I am backing this initiative to ensure that all people know how they can stay safe whilst making the most of the invaluable resources which the internet has to offer."
The key behaviours the campaign is focusing on changing are:
1) using strong, memorable passwords;
2) installing anti-virus software on new devices;
3) checking privacy settings on social media;
4) shopping safely online – always ensuring to check online retail sites are secure; and
5) downloading software and application patches when prompted.
