Gosport MP Caroline Dinenage has today welcomed the news that Hampshire County Council has approved the routes for the Stubbington bypass and southern section of Newgate Lane.
During a meeting at the Council offices in Winchester, Cllr Sean Woodward (Executive Member for Economy, Transport and Environment) rubberstamped key projects which will dramatically improve the road network between Gosport and Portsmouth. Councillor Woodward also agreed for work to begin on Peel Common Roundabout, the A27 (including works needed ahead of the Stubbington bypass) and Segensworth Roundabout.
Caroline was unable to attend the meeting in person as she was required to vote in Parliament, but submitted a written deputation to Cllr Woodward, outlining why the Gosport area is in such desperate need of infrastructure improvements. She also expressed concerns about the proximity of the proposed Newgate Lane south route to Woodcote Lane.
Caroline commented:
"It has been a long journey to get to where we are today and there is still a great deal to be done before these improvements are fully secured. However, yesterday's decision marks another significant milestone in our campaign for better access to Gosport and I will continue to urge my ministerial colleagues and local stakeholders to push forward these much needed improvements.
Not only will these changes provide great relief for longsuffering commuters, they will also help to ensure that the Gosport peninsula is able to reach its full economic potential in the coming years."
The Council's decision was made following a public consultation to which the majority of respondents expressed their support for the proposed routes.
Since becoming elected, Caroline has been firmly committed to tackling her constituency's road congestion problems. She has held numerous meetings with government ministers and last year she welcomed the Secretary of State for Transport, Patrick McLoughlin MP to the area.
