Local MP Caroline Dinenage has urged the Government to make significant investments in school sport in Questions to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport today.
Keen for young people to benefit from our golden summer of British sport, Caroline highlighted the importance of strong investment in sporting infrastructure that will ultimately create the opportunities for young people to emulate their sporting heroes. Caroline asked:
"It's vital to invest in the infrastructure, the skills and the facilities that our young people need, particularly in schools, can the Minister explain what the Government is doing to this end?"
Sports Minister Hugh Robertson, responding on behalf of the Government, expressed his support. He said:
"Through the school games, we're encouraging all schools to offer their pupils the chance to play competitive sport. The new youth sport strategy is a commitment over the next four years that will allow sport governing bodies to make these investments and the Places, People, Play programme has to date improved over 700 facilities across the country."
The Government recently announced plans to make competitive sport compulsory in all primary schools, in stark contrast with only two in five children taking part in competitive sports within schools under the previous Government.
