Gosport MP Caroline Dinenage has today welcomed the announcement that the Solent region will receive a further £27.1 million in the second round of the Local Growth Deal.
The investment follows on from the £124.8 million which the region won in the first round of the Deal in July 2014, bringing the total to £151.9 million.
£19.7 million from the initial package has already been ring-fenced for improving transport infrastructure in the Fareham and Gosport area. The extension of funding announced today will further support these works, enabling transport interventions to improve access to the Daedalus Enterprise Zone in Lee-on-the-Solent and the Welborne development in Fareham.
Commenting, Caroline said:
"For decades, the Gosport peninsula has been plagued with severe congestion problems but now we are making real progress towards tackling these issues once and for all. Improvements to our local infrastructure are crucial to the success of the Daedalus Enterprise Zone and cutting the journey times of long suffering commuters.
Not only does the investment show that the Government recognises our need for better transport connections, it also proves that the hard work of local MPs, Councils and the Solent Local Enterprise Partnership is paying off."
Since becoming elected, Caroline has been firmly committed to tackling her constituency's road congestion problems. She helped to secure an £8.5 million package for the work on Newgate Lane which began in January 2013 and later that year brought the Secretary of State for Transport, Patrick McLoughlin MP to the area to see the issues for himself.
