“I am extremely pleased to see this vital funding go to the Hampshire Constabulary. The money will go into preventing and reducing violent crime in Gosport, Stubbington, Lee on the Solent and Hill Head and I look forward to seeing what changes that the funding will bring.” Caroline Dinenage MP
This week the Home Secretary has allocated police forces across the UK money from the £100 million Serious Violence Fund that aims to tackle serious violence.
Hampshire has been granted £1,260,000 to combat and reduce serious violence across the area, including in Gosport. A total of 18 forces dealing with high levels of violent crime have been distributed money.
Out of the Serious Violence Fund, nationally around one third of the funding - £35 million – will help create violent reduction units (VRUs) and preventative measures. Another £1,600,000 million will be focused on collecting data that will help target action and planned reduction measures.
Ministerial meetings from this week will focus on the Serious Violence Taskforce which is supported by a new serious violence reduction team.
Local MP, Caroline Dinenage, commented:
“I am pleased to see that Government is acting on its commitment to tackle serious and violent crime. Violent crime can destroy lives, making residents feel unsafe and threaten the community.
“This money can bring tangible and real benefits to the Gosport constituency, helping residents feel safe, secure and protected by the police. The money can support and prevent those who might commit a serious violent crime, especially the young and vulnerable in our community.”
Home Secretary, Sajid Javid said:
“I’ve been doing everything in my power to ensure we have the strongest possible response to tackle violent crime - and law enforcement plays a key role in this.
“This money means forces can take urgent action, including more officers on duty in the worst affected areas.
“It takes a collective effort to tackle violent crime and I’ll continue to work closely with police and partners to end this senseless bloodshed.”
