Gosport MP Caroline Dinenage welcomed forty-eight local women to Parliament today.
Following International Women's Day on Thursday, Caroline hosted the group in Westminster to celebrate women's rights and achievements in politics. The ladies from the Gosport group 'Choices and Challenges' had the chance to grill Caroline on life as a female MP. They also enjoyed a tour of the Palace of Westminster with a focus on the historic fight for women's rights and their current role in Parliament.
Speaking after the event, Caroline said:
"It was a great privilege to welcome these Gosport ladies to Parliament, to celebrate all that women have already achieved and to inspire them to do more. Many of the women admitted that they have never voted, but their fiery questions and interest in the history of women in Parliament showed a real passion for understanding politics and making a difference".
Organiser Jacky Charman added that the group had gained a huge amount from their time in Parliament. She said:
"It's been a hugely educational and enjoyable day, which has enabled the women to find out more about themselves, their political rights and why it is important to vote. Many of the women have been really moved by the experience, and inspired to learn more about our history and politics – while having a great deal of fun too!"
