Local MP Caroline Dinenage welcomed new figures which show that Conservatives in Government have doubled spending on new school places - including £89 million for school places in Hampshire. This is £66 million more than they received under the last Government.
Commenting Caroline said:
"Unfortunately the last Government didn't do nearly enough to plan for a growing population – shockingly they actually cut 200,000 places in the middle of a baby boom. That's why I welcome the swift action taken by the Government to double the funding for school places across the country, with a big increase for new school places in Hampshire. This extra funding will deliver 11,230 additional primary places in our area by 2016.
This is good news for Hampshire: the Government's action will ensure we can deliver the best schools for our young people so that they have the skills they need to get on in life."
Figures show that funding for new school places across the country has increased to £5 billion in 2011/15, more than double that spent by Labour. A further £2.35 billion of funding has also been announced for 2015/17.
