Gosport MP Caroline Dinenage has welcomed the Attorney General's decision to reassess the lenient sentence given to a young man who inflicted life changing injuries on a gentleman from Gosport last year.
Samuel Armstrong was sentenced in September to 64 months in a young offenders' institute after he brutally attacked Andrew Toseland off Forton road in Gosport.
Caroline feels strongly that Mr Armstrong's punishment was unduly lenient and wrote a letter to the Attorney General, expressing her concerns about the sentence. The Attorney General has consequently decided to refer Mr Armstrong's case to the Court of Appeal, where three judges will decide whether or not to increase his sentence.
Speaking after the announcement was made, Caroline said:
"The Attorney General's decision sends out a firm message to people in society that this form of wicked, evil behavior is not acceptable and will be punished. It's so utterly wrong to wreck another human's life to this extent and effectively get away with it.
I am pleased that the Attorney General has taken this request seriously and that the sentence will be scrupulously reviewed. Getting justice for Mr Toseland and his family is paramount to this case."
Mr Toseland suffered severe injuries and will require 24 hour care for the rest of his life.
