Gosport MP Caroline Dinenage has today paid visit to the World War One Remembrance Centre at Fort Widley.
The centre, which opened last year, brings together collections of items and experiences to memorialise the First World War. During her visit, Caroline was given a tour of the facilities and spoke to staff about how they will be marking the 100th Anniversary of the start of the war.
Caroline said:
"It was fantastic to visit this unique Remembrance Centre which really highlights the important role that our local area played throughout World War One.
With the 100th Anniversary now upon us, I would encourage local people to pop in and learn more about the South's contribution to the war effort."
Today's visit follows the news that WW1 practice battlefield may have been unearthed at the Browndown site in Gosport after an official from Gosport Borough Council noticed a plan of what appears to be a complex system of First World War trenches in a 1951 aerial photo. Documentary and archival evidence is now being consulted in order to validate the theory.
