Local MP Caroline Dinenage joined campaigners in Parliament last week calling for more help for those struggling to keep warm this winter. "Cold Homes Week" was a series of events and activities focussing attention on those struggling to pay their fuel bills.
Commenting, Caroline said,
"I'm glad that the Government is committed to tackling fuel poverty; we must continue to do all we can to make sure that people stay warm this winter. Proper insulation could save families hundreds of pounds on their energy bills and end fuel poverty for good – so I'm backing this crucial campaign to help families struggling to heat their homes.
This is such an important issue affecting people in and around Gosport, so I'm more than happy to do all I can to support both this campaign and the Government's efforts to tackle fuel poverty."
Cold Homes Week also saw the release of new fuel poverty figures showing 7 million people in England are currently living in fuel poverty. Since coming to power the Government has increased Cold Weather Payments from £8.50 to £25 to help vulnerable people during periods of severe weather, maintained Winter Fuel Payments that over 12 million older people, and is expected to revolutionise energy efficiency in the UK by offering families cash to make energy efficiency improvements as part of "The Green Deal."
