Local MP Caroline Dinenage had the privilege of attending a special meeting of the Lee-on-the-Solent and Stubbington Royal Navy Association (LSRNA) yesterday evening, where she presented member Neville Saunders with the branch's first honorary presidency.
Having joined the Royal Navy in 1955, Neville has served with great distinction onboard HMS Russell, Orion, Albion and Ark Royal during a long and rewarding career spanning 27 years, finishing his service as a CPO in 1978. He then joined the RNA in 1982 and was a member at Hemel Hempstead where he was the Standard Bearer for 25 years and Chairman for 10 years of that Branch. Neville was instrumental in forming the RNA branch at Lee-on-Solent and Stubbington last year.
After the ceremony, Caroline said:
"I was delighted to present Neville with the honorary presidency. This is a fitting tribute to a man who has given so much in the service of our country and to the RNA movement. Just looking at the large numbers who turned out to celebrate this fantastic award, it's clear that Neville is very highly thought of and is a much loved member of the RNA."
Since opening its doors last year, the Lee-on-the Solent and Stubbington RNA has bucked the national trend and flourished – largely down to the vibrant ex-naval community that the Gosport peninsular is renowned for.
Caroline added:
"I am confident the Lee-on-the Solent and Stubbington RNA will continue to make great progress and I wish them every success for what I am sure will be another great year."
