Vulnerable families in the Gosport Constituency and across Hampshire who have deep rooted problems will receive vital support from the Troubled Families Programme in 2020/21. The Government has announced this week the local authorities funding allocation, with Hampshire receiving £1 996 200 which will benefit 1274 trouble families across the area.
The funding will provide intensive support, including for those who are unemployed, face mental health problems, anti-social behaviour and domestic abuse. The most vulnerable across the Gosport Constituency will benefit from help from integrated local services which will work with the whole family unit, focusing on prevention instead of merely reaction.
Since 2015, 297 733 families have made improvements, with 26 848 of these families having one or more adults moved off benefits and gained employment.
The programme was due to end in March 2020 but has been extended by the Government. The Government is looking to deliver on its Conservative Manifesto commitment to improve the Troubles Families Programme to provide integrated support to the most vulnerable families and children in communities.
The latest results show that, compared to families with similar characteristics who have not been on the programme, 1.5-2 years after starting to receive support:
- the proportion of children on the programme going into care has reduced by a third.
- the proportion of adults on the programme going to prison has reduced by a quarter and juvenile convictions reduced by 15%.
- more people on the programme are back in work, with 11% fewer people claiming Jobseekers Allowance.
Caroline Dinenage commented:
“I am very pleased to see that the Government has decided to extend the Troubled Families Programme and continue to support the most vulnerable families in our community.
“The scheme has already has a positive impact locally in recent years and the extended funding will help more of my constituents by offering them the vital family support that they need.”
