Local MP, Caroline Dinenage, pledged her support for this year’s Great British Spring Clean, run by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy. Caroline even met her childhood hero when Orinoco wombled into Parliament to promote the initiative.
The campaign, which runs from March 20th to April 13th, will see up to 600,000 people taking action to clean up streets, parks and beaches across the country.
The Great British Spring Clean, run by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, brings together individuals, community organisations, businesses and councils to show they love where they live and in 2019 more than half a million #LitterHeroes collected more than 900,000 bags of rubbish.
Caroline said:
“Last year local clean ups took place in the Gosport area and I was happy to roll up my sleeves and join some of the teams working in our parks and beaches. Over 560,000 people took part in over 17,000 events across the UK, showing that people really got behind this initiative. This year, we want to do even better, this is important for everyone.
In the Gosport area our fantastic local beaches are too often blighted by rubbish, yet 80% of marine litter comes from the land, and of course is entirely preventable. Nothing destroys our local environment more than litter.”
Keep Britain Tidy Chief Executive Allison Ogden-Newton OBE said:
“The overwhelming response to last year’s Great British Spring Clean showed that there are many hundreds of thousands of people out there who love where they live and are prepared to take action to make it better for themselves, their families and their communities.
“Litter is an issue that affects every corner of the country and, regardless of politics, the Great British Spring Clean is a campaign everyone can get behind. It is fantastic to have the support of Caroline to help us reach our target of getting 600,000 people out, taking action to clean up every corner of the country.”
