Today the Government has announced a £90 million package to help households and businesses cut their carbon emissions.
£70 million of the total package will fund Europe’s first-ever low carbon hydrogen production plants and an offshore wind project. This low or zero-emission alternative will work to switch industrial production away from fossil fuels to renewables.
The other £20 million will go towards ‘smart energy’ local projects across the UK. The money will see over a quarter of a million people have their homes fuelled by local renewable sources by 2030 which will not only help the environment, but could reduce energy bills by half.
Kwasi Kwarteng, Minister for Business, Energy and Clean Growth, said:
“Cleaning up emissions from industry and housing is a big challenge but today’s £90 million investment will set us on the right path as we develop clean technologies like hydrogen.
“This is an important part of our world-leading efforts in eliminating our contribution to climate change by 2050 while also growing our economy, creating up to 2 million green collar jobs across the country by 2030.”
The announcement today is a vital part of the Government’s commitment to becoming a net-zero economy by 2050. The Government has further committed to phase-out coal by 2024.
Local MP, Caroline Dinenage, commented:
“I am thrilled by today’s announcement which will make a vital difference to businesses and homes across the UK as they reduce their carbon footprint to fight climate change.
“We need to do more to combat the devastating effects of climate change and I look forward to seeing the Governments ambitious plans.”
