This Safer Internet Day (February 9th) Gosport MP, Caroline Dinenage, is urging constituents to take steps to keep themselves and loved ones safe online.
Caroline, who is the Minister of Digital and Culture, hosted Gosport’s first ever ‘Scam Smart’ event back in 2018 which included providing useful information from local organisations on recognising online fraud. In addition, her website has a dedicated ‘Scams Advice’ page for those looking for advice and support.
Now, in her role as Minister in the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, she is pushing through new Online Safety legislation through Parliament this year to tackle online harms and safety. The legislation will hold tech firms to account over their content, appoint Ofcom as an online regulator and set out clear definitions of what is acceptable legal content.
She commented:
“In many ways the internet has been a lifeline over the pandemic, enabling us to stay connected, entertained, work and learn online. However, it also has a much darker side that can particularly impact vulnerable and young users.
“Safer Internet Day is an opportunity to ensure we are keeping ourselves and our families safe online. From blocking harmful content, to fraud awareness and checking sources, you can take action at home."
