Gosport MP, Caroline Dinenage, is encouraging constituents across Gosport, Hill Head, Stubbington and Lee-on-the-Solent to take part in the National Numeracy Challenge this National Numeracy Day (19th May).
Caroline’s interest in this particular issue was sparked following a meeting with Gosport based group ‘We CAN Read’ back in 2013. Subsequently, she has led a government debate and a Select Committee Investigation into low numeracy and literacy skills across the country. She also formed the All Party Parliamentary Group for Maths & Numeracy.
Today, half of all the working-age population in the UK have the numeracy skills of a primary school child.
That is why Caroline this year is again supporting National Numeracy Day, along with celebrities Strictly Come Dancing star Katya Jones, TV's Rachel Riley and Bobby Seagull, Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis, Bake Off 2020 winner Peter Sawkins and poet Harry Baker to help the nation get on with numbers.
Caroline commented:
“Having poor numeracy skills not only affects your day to day life but also your confidence, your ability to work and can lead to poor health.
“The National Numeracy Challenge is a brilliant and free way to boost your skills in a way that can benefit the whole family – from helping your kids with homework to managing the household budget.”
On 19 May, there will be celebrities’ videos and have a go at challenges– including learning a dance routine with Katya, baking cupcakes with Peter, and rapping with Harry - via the National Numeracy Day web page.
Residents can also take part in three live online events: support your kids with maths; getting on at work; and managing your money. No registration is needed for the free events – they can be watched and joined via the National Numeracy charity’s Facebook, Twitter, YouTube or Linkedin channels or found using the hashtag #NationalNumeracyDay.
Primary school pupils across the UK can also take part in the School Number Heroes competition by letting their imaginations run wild and creating a numbers-related picture
