“Clean air is vital and it’s deeply concerning that our local area has been identified as being at risk of dangerous pollution levels. The steps in the Clean Air Strategy will help address the issues of air quality around Gosport and Fareham.” Caroline Dinenage MP.
The Government has released the 2019 Clean Air Strategy, publishing its world leading plan to tackle air pollution. The UK is the first major economy to adopt goals based off World Health Organisation (WHO) recommendations, going far beyond EU requirements.
The measures set out will cut the costs of air pollution to society annually by £1.7 billion and give new powers to local government. In addition to the legally-binding international targets to tackle five of the most damaging air pollutants, new and tougher goals have been set. The Strategy is aiming to tackle the problems that stem from dirty air, ranging from health problems such as asthma and cardiovascular diseases, to the environmental consequences.
Caroline commented:
“This comprehensive Strategy is necessary to tackle our pollution problems. Pollution not only harms our environment, but shortens lives. After the Government report published last year, which identified Fareham as exceeding guideline levels of pollution, especially around the A27 and A32, I very much welcome the steps taken by the Government to tackle dirty air. The Strategy encourages better, cleaner technologies and simple changes to industries that will benefit our local area.”
