The Prime Minister has today triggered Article 50 of the Treaty on European Union, beginning the process of Britain's withdrawal from the European Union. This gives effect to the democratic decision of the people of the United Kingdom and the Gosport constituency who voted decisively to leave the European Union. In a letter delivered today to Donald Tusk, President of the European Council, she confirmed the government's decision to invoke Article 50 and outlined key principles to make sure the negotiations are as smooth and successful as possible.
This is an historic day, and during the negotiations that will now unfold, we will be working to secure a good deal and a bright future for Britain. I want to see a global Britain that takes advantage of new international trade and investment opportunities – not just to the benefit of large corporations, but small and medium sized businesses, too. I hope to see our relationships with countries outside of the EU strengthened, whilst remaining close allies to our European neighbours. I fully support the Prime Minister's emphasis on the continued importance of European values and believe strongly that it is Britain's responsibility to promote these values. Leaving the EU does not change this. However, it is right that Britain's future outside of the EU reflects the desire for change clearly demonstrated by the referendum.
