Local MP Caroline Dinenage yesterday joined armed forces personnel from HMS Sultan selling poppies at Monument Station in central London.
London Poppy Day is a campaign led by the Royal British Legion to raise money to support service men and women, veterans and their families. Each year, uniformed personnel and volunteers hit mainline and underground stations across the capital to sell poppies ahead of Remembrance Day on November 11th. This year, over 2000 servicemen, women and volunteers took part.
Over 150 staff from bases in our region were in the capital, including HMS Collingwood, the Diving School at Whale Island and HMS Sultan. The Gosport bases had a great turn out, with 80 Sultan personnel doing their bit to raise money for the Poppy Appeal.
Speaking afterwards, Caroline said:
"I was honoured to join the HMS Sultan team in London today collecting for the Royal British Legion. This is such a worthy cause and reminds us of the huge sacrifices that these brave people make to keep us safe. Huge thanks to our local service men and women for supporting this worthwhile campaign and in particular Sultan's Steve Munday for recruiting so many of them."
Caroline also met up with sailors from HMS Sultan last year, when they sold poppies at London Bridge Station from dawn until dusk.
