Local MP Caroline Dinenage is encouraging businesses in Gosport, Stubbington, Lee on Solent and Hill Head to get involved in Purple Tuesday this November by introducing new measures to make the shopping experience more inclusive and accessible for disabled customers.
On Tuesday 13th November 'Purple Tuesday' is raising awareness of the lack of accessibility and poor customer service disabled people sometimes experience in shops, especially when they are overcrowded. The campaign is endorsed by the Government and has received pledges of support from leading brands such as Argos, Asda, Sainsbury's and Barclays, as well as some of the UK's busiest shopping destinations like Bluewater.
Improving disabled customer service is vital not only because it is the right thing to do, but because disabled people and their families have an estimated £249 billion spending power, or 'Purple Pound', that could be lost if shoppers are worried about a potential bad experience.
"Christmas shopping can be a nightmare for anyone and can be especially stressful if you have a disability. I am delighted that the Purple Tuesday campaign is aiming to make shopping a more inclusive experience for all. I am glad to hear that the campaign has the support of leading brands, however, it is important that independent shops and local high streets in the Gosport constituency also take part."
