Local MP Caroline Dinenage welcomed the latest unemployment figures which show another fall in the number of people looking for work in Gosport. The number of people looking for work fell to 769 in December - the lowest number since January 2008, with the JSA claimant rate steady at just 1.3%.
The good news on jobs was matched by figures that show that across the UK median pay per hour - reflecting what a middle-income person earns - has gone up by 3.3% in the last year; six times the current rate of inflation.
Caroline commented:
"The number of people looking for work in Gosport has halved since 2010. This is shows the fantastic work that our local businesses have been doing over the last 5 years.
But there's always more work to be done. We need to continue to back the small businesses that provide the growth in our local economy by cutting red tape and bureaucracy. We also have to maintain our support for rigorous education and proper skills training so that people have the skills they need to get good jobs. Finally it's crucial for both businesses and families that we keep interest rates low by sticking to the plan of restoring sanity to our public finances."
